From the Winery:
VINTAGE: 2022 was typical in Santa Barbara County because it was challenging. In fact, it's safe to say by now that true vintage variation does exist in our growing region and we don't think this is a bad thing. Across our region we saw yields struggle from several years of dry conditions which meant that we had to be incredibly careful about our pick calls. Heat waves in summer pushed some areas of the vineyard to ripen while other sections had slower development of sugars. Yields were down significantly for this varietal at Star Lane Vineyard, but this meant we had a highly concentrated and well developed crop to work with. Like 2021, we saw great depth and concentration in the fruit that is clearly the result of the further maturing of the vineyard. While we had to continue to closely manage the youngest vines, the blocks of the vineyard with 5+ years of age are starting to behave the way we would expect from a well situated "white Bordeaux" vineyard.
WINEMAKER NOTES: As always, Sauvignon whole clusters went direct to press where they underwent a slow press cycle designed to minimize bitter components and promote fresh flavor profiles. We opted for 100% neutral French oak in this vintage as we felt the acid didn't need any help and the removal of Semillon from the blend would be more than made-up for with the roundness offered by the neutral barrel. Secondary fermentation, which can soften the palate feel, was prevented to balance out the natural body observed. An advantage we have at Star Lane Vineyard over Bordeaux is that we really don't need Semillon to "flesh out" the wine, so we opted not to use any this year and plan to move forward with 100% Sauvignon Blanc as the true compliment to the world-class Cabernet that is the focus of Star Lane Vineyard.
TASTING NOTES: Tropical and stone fruits are the hallmark of Star Lane Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc. The intensity of the wine is apparent before the first sip and only confirmed when the wine is tasted. You can feel the body of the wine as it hits your palate, but the verve and energy of freshness carries through all the way to the finish which only begs you to take a second sip and desire a second glass.
