From The Winery:
Whitcraft Winery: Drake Whitcraft makes beautifully balanced, site-specific wines in his low-fi Santa Barbara winery. Growing up in Santa Barbara under the tutelage of his father, who started Whitcraft Winery in 1985, and his friend Burt Williams, founder of Williams-Selyem in Sonoma, Drake has formed good relationships with some of the best vineyards in the Central Coast with a focus on the cool climate and diverse terroir of Sta. Rita Hills.
Winery Tasting Note: On the nose, the 2017 Z Cuvée is deliciously fragrant, reminiscent of a fresh basket of Rainier cherries and balanced by a secondary layer of a well-weathered cedar cigar box. Upon first sip, the front palate is immediately refreshed and invigorated with dried goji berry flavors. As the acidity splays across the front of the tongue, it is curbed by the maturation of the rounded tannins. The finish is curtailed and taut, though appropriately adorned with enough juicy berry to beckon you back to the glass.
Zotovich Vineyards & Winery is a small, family-owned operation located in the middle of the northern Sta. Rita Hills AVA, between Buellton and Lompoc. The vineyard was purchased in 2004, with the first estate wines produced 2 years later. The vineyard was first planted in the late 1990s, almost entirely to Italian varieties, and is now grafted over to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, and Grenache.
This exceptional Chardonnay has a nose of pear and baked apple notes followed by citrus scents of honeyed lemon with a freshness minerality underlining the wine’s acidity. The palate holds a combination of candied lemon zest, with notes of browned butter and fresh flowers, complimenting the wines briny minerality.
